Morarji Desai was born on 29 February 1896 in a village named Bhadeli in Bulsar district of Gujarat. Biography of Morarji Desai (4th Prime Minister of India). His father Ranchod Ji Desai was a school teacher in Bhavnagar, and later committed suicide due to mental depression. Morarji took his primary education at “The Kundala School” in Saurashtra, and later got enrolled in Bai Ava High School in Valsad. He joined the Gujarat Civil Services after graduating from Wilson College, Mumbai.

Morarji Desai was the freedom fighter of India and the fourth Prime Minister of the country. He was the first non-Congress Prime Minister. Moraraji, who became the Prime Minister at the age of 81, is the only person who has been awarded India’s highest honor Bharat Ratna and Pakistan’s highest honor Nishan-e-Pakistan. Morarji went to jail several times during the freedom movement. In 1931, he became the secretary of the Congress Committee of Gujarat Pradesh, and then established the branch of the All India Youth Congress and became its president. With his leadership skills, he became a favorite of freedom fighters and an important leader of Gujarat Congress. Morarji Desai ji got married in the year 1911, his wife’s name was Gujraben.  He had five children.  He was a very honest and sincere person, he always supported the truth.

Morarji’s political journey

The coincidence of destiny was such that after the sudden death of Shastri ji, only after 18 months, the Prime Minister’s chair became vacant once again. After the death of Shastri, Congress President K. Kamaraj suggested the name of Pandit Nehru’s daughter Indira Gandhi for the post of Prime Minister, but Morarji Desai had also proposed his own name for the post of Prime Minister. The impasse was resolved through voting by the Congress Parliamentary Party and Indira Gandhi emerged victorious. After this Morarji became the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister in the Indira Gandhi cabinet. In 1969, when Indira took away the finance ministry from him, he resigned from the cabinet. After this the Congress was divided into two sections, one headed by Morarji and the other by Indira Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi got immense success in the 1971 Lok Sabha elections, while the faction of Morarji (who himself had won the election) could not do much. Morarji Desai took the initiative to improve relations with neighboring countries Pakistan and China. He restored diplomatic relations with China and returned many of the constitutional amendments made by the Indira Gandhi government to their original form.

Some other things

During the election campaign, Morarji Desai had talked about the closure of India’s intelligence agency “RAW”. And when he became prime minister he had really reduced the size and budget of the agency. After resigning from the post of Prime Minister, Morarji Desai retired from politics at the age of 83, and started living in Mumbai.

Morarji Desai’s death

Morarji Desai died on 10 April 1995 at the age of 99. Morarji Desai, one of the very close people of the Congress, got a chance to become the Prime Minister at the age of 81 after leaving the party. And after being the Prime Minister for 2 years, he resigned. Morarji had spent many years in jail due to his participation in the freedom struggle. Morarji Desai was the first Prime Minister of India, to whom both India and Pakistan have been honored with their highest honor.
