Sher Bahadur Deuba (Prime Minister of Nepal)

Sher Bahadur Deuba was born on 13 June 1946. Place of birth He was born in Ashigram, a village in Dadeldhura district of far western Nepal. He was born in a Kshatriya Rajput caste. His wife is Dr. Arju Rana Deuba. Sher Bahadur Deuba holds bachelor’s degrees in arts and law.

Deuba Political Life

Sher Bahadur Deuba started his political career in 1965 at a very young age – 19 years old. He also served as the President of Far Western Students’ Committee Kathmandu from 1965 to 1968. In the 1960s and 1970s, Deuba was also imprisoned for 9 years in between for working in line with (against) the panchayat system. Deuba also served in the Political Committee of the Nepali Congress in the 1980s. Deuba was also awarded a standard doctorate degree by the Jawaharlal Nehru University in India in November 2016. In 2017, he became the 40th Prime Minister of Nepal. And at present he is the 43rd Prime Minister. He was appointed Prime Minister of Nepal for the fifth time. He was the Prime Minister of Nepal – the first time from 1995 to 1997, the second time from 2001 to 2002, the third time from 2004 to 2005, the fourth time from 2017 to 2018, and is currently.

Deuba’s mass movement – 1990

After the mass movement in 1990, Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected to the House of Representatives in 1991 from Dadeldhura I. The same seat, since which he has occupied in every election. In 1994, Deuba was also elected the leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party. Deuba was appointed Prime Minister in 1995 and then headed a coalition government with the Rashtriya Prajatantra Party.
After Girija Prasad Koirala resigned as Prime Minister, Deuba defeated Sushil Koirala to become the leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party. And became Prime Minister for the second time in July 2001. Deuba requested the dissolution of Parliament in May 2022, holding fresh elections and establishing his own separate party, the Nepali Congress Party. And then in October 2022, when Deuba demanded postponement of the election, King Gyanendra ji dismissed him due to his incompetence. And after two other governments in 2 years, Gyanendra ji re-appointed Deuba as Prime Minister in 2004. But then soon after, he was again removed from the post by the king on 1 February 2005. Deuba was also sentenced to 2 years in prison for corruption charges in July 2005. But then later on February 13, 2006, after he was punished by the anti-corruption organization, he was also released. Then in September 2007, Deuba closed his separate party and joined the Nepali Congress.

Constituent Assembly Elections – In the Constituent Assembly elections held on 10 April 2008, Deuba was himself nominated by the Nepali Congress as a candidate for both Dadeldhura-I and Kanchanpur-Four constituencies. He had won from both the constituencies. And had left his Kanchanpur-4 seat. Where he was replaced by Harish Thakur of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). Which he defeated in the general election after the by-election. Deuba was nominated as the Nepali Congress candidate in a subsequent vote for prime minister held at the Constituent Assembly on 15 August 2008. But then he was defeated by the Maoist’s Pushpa Kamal Dahal. It was only after the death of Sushil Koirala, that Deuba was elected the President of the Nepali Congress in the Thirteenth General Conference.

Deuba has a very old relationship with India and became Prime Minister in June 2017. His first foreign trip was to India itself. Deuba visited India in August 2017. And he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sher Bahadur Deuba has already made three visits to India as Prime Minister in 1996, 2004 and 2005.
