Pupul Jayakar Birth and Early Life

Pupul Jayakar was born on 11 September 1915 in Etawa, Uttar Pradesh. She was born in a middle class family. He spent his early life living in Etawah. Pupul Jayakar never imagined that she would do such great work for the country in the coming times. Pupul Jayakar’s father was an officer in the civil service, due to which Pupul got the opportunity to roam many places from the beginning.

Pupul Jayakar started education from Etawah itself. But she went to Banaras at the age of 11 (due to change of father). She studied education at the school built by Annie Besant. Then the father was changed to Allahabad, then Pupul Jayakar was 15 years old. He continued his studies in Allahabad. And she came in contact with the Nehru family at such a young age because of her father, because Pupul Jayakar’s father was a friend of Motilal Nehru (Jawaharlal Nehru’s father). After this Pupul Jayakar completed his graduation from “London School of Economics and Bedford College London”.

Pupul Jayakar’s family was very simple. The name of his parents is not known. Pupul Jayakar’s father was an officer in the Indian Civil Service. His mother was a housewife, who was from a Brahmin family of Gujarat. Pupul Jayakar had one brother and four sisters. Brother’s name was Kumaril Mehta, and sisters were Poornima, Amarganga, Nandini and Premlata Mehta. In 1937, Pupul Jayakar married Verrister Manmohan Jayakar (love marriage). They have a daughter named Radhika Herzberger. Pupul Jayakar’s  Husband died in 1972.

Career of Pupul Jayakar

Pupul Jayakar studied journalist from London, after which he applied for a job in “The Times of India“. But even after so much education, he could not get a job. Subsequently, after moving to Bombay (Mumbai), Pupul Jayakar launched a children’s magazine “Toy Cart“, which is illustrated by renowned illustrators MF Hussain and Jamini Roy. 

Pupul Jayakar joined politics in 1940. She was appointed Assistant Secretary for Women’s Affairs in the National Planning Committee of India in Kasturba Trust. At the same time his friendship J. From Krishnamurti. And she also got involved in the handloom industry. After this Pupul Jayakar established the Weavers Service Center in Madras (Chennai) during the Ministry of Textiles. At the beginning of this, Pupul Jayakar became friends with Indira Gandhi. When Indira Gandhi became Prime Minister in 1966, Pupul Jayakar was appointed as her cultural advisor, and Indira Gandhi used to share everything with him. Pupul Jayakar became the chairman of the Handicrafts and Handlooms Corporation of India. From 1974 to 1977, Pupul Jayakar headed the All Handicrafts Board (HHEC).

In 1980, Pupul Jayakar organized a series of Indian art festivals in London, USA and Paris and Japan. Due to which Indian arts gained popularity in the West. After this, Pupul Jayakar was appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in 1982. She was also the Vice President of Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust. Pupul Jayakar helped a lot in the Krishnamurthy Foundation and was active with the Krishnamurthy Foundation in India until her death. Pupul Jayakar J. Has also written a biographical book on Krishnamurti and Indira Gandhi.
